Have you ever opened a time capsule?  They're a fascinating
look back to a specific moment that was captured in time.

The period between 1946 to 1990 was a time of tremendous growth and building in America but it was also a time of fear and anxiety.  Most historians refer to the second half of the 20th Century as The Cold War years.

Fear of a nuclear attack from foreign forces brought about the popularity of fall out shelters after World War II.  The largest known private underground bomb shelter in our country is a subterranean 5,000 sq.ft. villa, a time capsule of sorts.

Built by Girard Henderson in 1978, the fascinating compound is located in Las Vegas and, at first glance, looks like a typical desert community property.
Except for the two ventilation shafts protruding out of the backyard you wouldn't know that a shelter is buried 26 feet underneath the house.

In case an apocalypse forced him underground Mr. Henderson wanted the comforts of home as well as outdoor activities.  The subterranean house is encased in a 12,500 sq.ft. bunker that features a 4-hole putting green, a swimming pool, two jacuzzis, a sauna, a dance floor, a barbeque grill, and murals of tranquil settings of nature.

The house retains the original 1970s decor.

Wallpapered ceiling and parquet floor - oh, so 70s!

The intricate light system can simulate day, dusk, sunset and night.
Mr. Henderson showed his sense of humor when designing the shelter - he included faux birds and squirrels throughout the 'outdoor' property.
Living in a state that is plagued by devastating tornadoes, I wouldn't mind having an underground home beneath our house - especially if it was decorated in authentic vintage style.  Even if you never used it for a safe haven from storms and nuclear attack, it would make an awesome party pad!

  1. That is so cool...and so 1970's Vegas! I am not sure I could ever get used to the decor, though...
