Yesterday's post featured beautiful Japanese craftsmanship
and today is all about another oriental art that I adore -

Chinoiserie
(pronounced sheen-was-er-ree, emphasis on the last syllable)

Until a few years ago I didn't even know how to pronounce Chinoiserie but thanks to the miracle of technology (i.e., the internet) I was able to hear the correct pronunciation on YouTube.

Chinoiserie is defined as a style, object or decoration that reflects
Chinese qualities or motifs.  Which, did I already say,  "I adore!"?

Imagine the reaction of the wife of the first European merchant who brought back goods from China.  The Silk Road, a trading route from Europe to China, dates back to between 206 BC - 220 AD during the Han Dynasty.

Most people think that Marco Polo was the first merchant adventurer who imported Chinese goods to Europe but the Silk Road was well established by the 13th century.
